The gradiation in color behind the Tawas Point lighthouse is a phenomenon known as "Earth Shadow". When the sun sets in the west, it casts a shadow of the earth on the eastern sky, picking up the color of the sunset itself. But the shadow of the earth cuts off the sinset color leaving the deep blue of impending night below this 'second horizon'.

This the most pronounced example of this phenomenon that I've ever photographed.
